Our History

After World War 1, the early veterans organized the Army-Navy Union.  In March, 1919 the American Legion was organized in Paris.  Therefore the name was changed from the Army-Navy Union to the American Legion after it was chartered by Congress.

Leonard Hatch was Commander of the Army-Navy Union. Warren Hood was Commander of the American Legion.

We first met at the Mennies building (535 Landis Avenue).  Then we moved to the Smith building.  After a few years we moved to the Durand building at 6th and Landis Avenue on the the third floor.  A couple of years after that, a house on Elmer Street was purchased and a meeting hall was constructed.  In 1940, we sold the Elmer Street site, and purchased the property that we have now on South West Avenue.  About five years later we demolished the hall and built a new hall which lasted until 1960.   The condition of the hall was such that we could not get insurance, so we built the building that we now have.
